Saturday the much anticipated "Clash of the Titans" was played in Moorreesburg. 30 players per side were divided into 15 betterball teams each. All the betterball scores would be added together for each respective team
at the end of the day. The team with the most points would be the winner!
The day started at 09h30 with a hearty breakfast at the clubhouse prepared by the excellent Maria in the clubhouse kitchen. The perfect start to a chilly winters morning in the Swartland.
With the tanks full the players moved to their respective tees at 11h00 where the golf teed off with a "shotgun" start. This meant that all the players started at the same time and finished at the same time. What a brilliant idea!!
The course was in superb condition and the weather played along perfectly! The greens were smooth, brisk and not for the faint hearted! The rough was punishing and ruined your score if you didn't hit the ball straight. Scoring was very difficult to say the least.
After a tough day all the golfers exchanged scores to get an idea of where the match stood. Unfortunately they had to wait (in anticipation!) to hear the final result.
By 18h00 that evening it was time read the result. The winner of the first Swartland Derby since 1988 was the Moorreesburg Tigers by a huge margin of 47 points! They now have bragging rights (and a rather handsome trophy) until the next match is played at Malmesbury next month.
A fantastically organised day was finished with the ever popular steak-braai with the meat supplied by Moodies Butchery (www.moodiesbutchery.co.za).
Another article will be posted within the next few days with the scores and photos. So be on the lookout!
